St. Lucia Jazz Festival History

The St. Lucia Jazz Festival is absolutely one of the best times to travel to St. Lucia. The Jazz Festival is one of the most anticipated yearly events in St. Lucia and even the Caribbean for that matter. The Jazz Festival was created in 1991 as a way to increase tourism during the month of May as well as to promote tourism to St. Lucia in a new and exciting way. What started out as a small, poorly attended festival has been transformed into a world renowned 10 day Jazz Festival with chart topping performers. In 2011 the St. Lucia Jazz Festival celebrates 20 years of history as well as incredible jazz performances that have been in the hit of the small Caribbean island.

During the festival there are several performances which include not only jazz but, new age jazz, rhythm and blues, and reggae. The artists performing at the festival arrive from various places such as the United States, Africa, Europe, Latin America, as well as the Caribbean and other places. Previous performers include, Patti La Belle, Chaka Khan, Al Jarreau, George Benson and Air Supply. The performances are held in various venues throughout the island with the historic landmark, Pigeon Island being the main venue for the larger performances during the festival.

The events at the Jazz Festival range from formal concert performances, intimate open-air venues, late-night club venues, to open air picnics. The variety of events, allows visitors to see and experience other areas of the island as well. In the past the festival has been considered by many as “The Premier Jazz Festival” of the Caribbean region and it was also ranked among the top three Festivals in the world.

Currently the St. Lucia Jazz Festival is ranked one of the second best festivals in the Caribbean, rivaled only by the Carnaval in Trinidad and Tobago. The St. Lucia Jazz Festival is a smorgasbord of jazz, R&B, fusion, Soca, soul, Zouk, and Music Latina surrounded by one of the most unique and exotic venues in the world.

If you plan to travel to St. Lucia during the Jazz Festival it is highly recommended that you book your accommodations and flights early. Since there is such a high influx of visitors to the island during this time many hotels tend to fill up quickly.
