If you are an active traveler, St. Lucia hiking may appeal to you. Imagine stunning tropical views as you hike up St. Lucia’s Gros Piton. There may not be any other St. Lucia attractions as rewarding as the views from St. Lucia hiking trails. Hiking in St. Lucia truly gives you a chance to see a side of St. Lucia you would not get to see any other way.
The Pitons are perhaps the tallest of St. Lucia attractions at almost 3,000 feet high. The Piton Mountains consist of two peaks, Petit Piton and Gros Piton. Petit Piton is the most treacherous of St. Lucia hiking trails. Hikers are not encouraged to hike up its trail. Gros Piton is no walk in the park either but is more hospitable for St. Lucia hiking enthusiasts.
The time it takes to complete a Gros Piton hike varies between 3 to 6 hours. It is best to take a tour to have an experienced guide lead you and tell you about the history of the Pitons. Guides are available through the Piton Tour Guides Association. Tours cost $30 US dollars.
A Gros Piton hike is not an easy hike. Even more experienced hikers will tell you how steep the hike is. The Gros Piton hike can also be very steep and slippery. Be sure to wear hiking boots or appropriate shoes on the hike. There are many trees for you to grab on to if you must; but be sure you are paying attention while traveling up any St. Lucia hiking trails during your visit.
I have personally hiked up Gros Piton Mountain and can tell you that you should be in decent shape if you plan to go up or at the very least have travel insurance that will pay to get you off the mountain if you get stuck! Halfway up I was wondering why I decided to take the climb but once I reached the top I was sooo glad that I made it. Be sure to check the St. Lucia weather before you go to make sure that it won’t rain so you don’t have to trek through slippery mud like I did!
Hiking in St. Lucia will be something that any traveler would remember and cherish for years to come. The views are spectacular and worth the effort. The Pitons are a favorite on many people’s list of St. Lucia attractions and should definitely be visited when you travel to St. Lucia.
Your hotel or even a good taxi driver (I recommend Anthony Larichere 758-384-4622) should be able to arrange transportation to the start of Gros Piton trail which is located in the town of Fond Gens Libre. You can also contact the St. Lucia Lands and Forestry Department at 758-450-2078 or the Piton Tour Guide Association at 758-459-9738.
**TIP** You should start the hike early! As in at least by 8am so that you get down before the sun sets. It typically takes between 4 to 6 hours to hike up and down. Also be sure to bring water as you will likely be sweating a lot up and down the mountain. Have a great time!
A must before you hike Gros Piton!
